Technology Advisory

Independent advice on a defined technology problem or decision, delivered as a written recommendation by people who also design and implement systems, and useful whether or not Ryoss builds anything.

Technology decisions often fall to whoever is closest: an owner approving a vendor quote, an operations manager choosing a platform, or an IT lead asked for a strategy with no time to write one. The advice should still be useful if Ryoss never implements anything.

What we offer

  1. Strategic Consulting

A focused engagement for one significant technology decision: the options compared, a written recommendation and the reasoning behind it.

  2. Fractional CTO

Senior technology leadership embedded in an organisation part-time, with continuing responsibility for technical direction and the context to make decisions that fit the business.

  3. Retained Advisory

Continuing access to experienced technology advice for organisations whose own people own the technology agenda, from people who already know the environment.

  4. Technology Reviews

A bounded review of a system, project, proposal or risk, delivered as written findings with a clear statement of what was and was not inspected.

A defined question, not an embedded role

The organisation brings a problem, proposal or decision. Ryoss assesses it on technical and commercial merits and provides a recommendation or a set of options. Advice is written down: the options considered, the reasons for the choice, and what was rejected.

Valid outcomes include doing nothing, retaining the existing system, buying a product, using another supplier, hiring internally or reducing the proposed scope. Ryoss does not need to perform the subsequent implementation. The service is lighter than fractional CTO work: it does not require Ryoss to become part of the organisation or to take continuing ownership of the technology agenda.

How we give advice

  • Advice that stands on its own

Recommendations rest on their merits and do not depend on Ryoss doing the work. Doing nothing, buying a product, using another supplier or hiring internally are all valid answers.

  • Written down with reasons

Each recommendation records the options considered, why one was chosen and what was rejected, so the reasoning can be tested later.

  • Commercial as well as technical

Running cost, dependence on suppliers and the capability needed to operate the result are weighed alongside the technical merits.

  • Clear about limits

Each piece of advice states what was inspected and what was not. We do not give legal, regulatory or certification advice.

How a typical engagement works

  1. 01Question
  2. 02Investigate
  3. 03Compare
  4. 04Recommend
  5. 05Follow-up

01Question

Define the question

We agree which decision or problem is being addressed, what a useful answer looks like and who needs to be involved.

02Investigate

Investigate the options

We look at the current environment, the options on the table and the constraints, including the option of changing nothing.

03Compare

Test each option

Options are compared on technical risk, running cost, dependence on suppliers and the capability needed to run them.

04Recommend

Write the recommendation

The result is a written recommendation with the reasoning and the rejected alternatives, usable whether or not Ryoss does any follow-on work.

05Follow-up

Follow up on the recommendation

Questions that come up while the recommendation is acted on can be answered, and implementation can be arranged separately if wanted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does advisory mean Ryoss will implement the recommendation?

No. Implementation can be arranged separately if asked. The advice is written to stand on its own, including where another supplier or an internal hire is the better next step.

What questions can you advise on?

A defined problem or decision: choosing between platforms, building or buying, assessing a vendor proposal, deciding what to do with a struggling project or planning a migration.

How is the advice delivered?

As a written recommendation, with the options considered, the reasoning and the alternatives that were rejected.

Can we use the advice without hiring Ryoss to build anything?

Yes. The advice is written to stand on its own, and doing nothing, buying a product, using another supplier or hiring internally are all valid answers.

How long does an advisory engagement take?

It depends on the question. Advisory work is scoped around one defined decision, so it is normally shorter and narrower than an embedded role. Scope is agreed after a free discovery call.

Do you need access to our systems?

Often some. We may need access to relevant systems, documentation and people, usually read-only, so the advice rests on what is actually there.

What is the difference between advisory and a technology review?

A technology review assesses one system, proposal or risk and reports what it finds. Strategic consulting compares options for a decision and recommends a direction.

When should we choose Fractional CTO or Retained Advisory?

Choose Fractional CTO when the organisation needs someone to take continuing responsibility for technical direction. Choose Retained Advisory when its own people own the agenda and want continuing access to outside advice.

Do you give legal or compliance advice?

No. Advice covers technical and commercial technology questions. Legal, regulatory and certification questions belong with the appropriate specialist.

How do we get started?

Book a free 15 minute discovery call and describe the problem or decision. We will say whether we can help and what a sensible next step looks like.

Start with a conversation

Book a free 15 minute call. Describe the problem, the systems involved and what you already know, and we will tell you plainly whether we can help and what a sensible next step looks like. There is no obligation.
